Truck dispatch in Californiabuilt for owner-operators.

California is the country's vegetable garden, port of entry, and warehouse rack — all at once. The freight is here; the trick is getting paid for the right direction. CA outbound (especially produce + electronics) commands premium rates. CA inbound is notoriously soft. We dispatch with that math in mind on every lane.

// Top freight cities

Where freight moves in California.

Each city is its own freight micro-market. We dispatch in all of them and route you toward whichever one fits your equipment and home base best.

Los Angeles / Long Beach

Largest US container port complex. Drayage, transload, and Inland Empire connection moves are constant. Outbound to Dallas and the Midwest is steady; inbound is where rates collapse — we round-trip plan to avoid empty CA returns.

Salinas Valley

Lettuce, spinach, broccoli, strawberries Apr–Oct. Salinas → Philadelphia / Baltimore reefer hits $9,000–$10,000 per load at peak season. Easily the highest single-load rates in US trucking.

Central Valley (Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton)

Stone fruit + melons + tomatoes May–Sep, navel oranges Nov–May, almonds Aug–Oct. Outbound reefer to the Northeast and Midwest peaks each summer — rates often double off-season averages.

Inland Empire (Riverside / San Bernardino)

Amazon, Walmart, Target megaregional DCs. Drayage from LA/LB to IE warehouses, then outbound DC stock to the rest of the country. Drop-and-hook freight is plentiful; live-load delays are the trade.

Oakland

Refrigerated export gateway — almonds, dairy, produce containers ship to Asia from Oakland. Reefer inbound from Central Valley to Oakland for export is a steady feeder lane.

// CARB + the inbound trap

Two things every owner-op needs to know about California freight.

CARB Clean Truck Check applies to out-of-state trucks. Any truck operating in California — including out-of-state owner-ops just passing through — must comply with the Clean Truck Check program ($31.18/year per truck, semi-annual emissions test). Drayage entry into LA/LB ports requires a CARB-compliant tractor (2010+ engine year minimum for most port programs). Fines run up to $10,000 per day for non-compliance. We confirm your truck qualifies before booking CA work.

The CA inbound trap is real. California outbound rates are some of the highest in the country (especially produce). Inbound rates collapse because most carriers want to be in CA to grab outbound. The math: a $4,500 outbound from Salinas only works if you've booked the inbound right. We've seen owner-ops chase CA produce rates and lose money on the return. We round-trip plan every CA offer.

The Salinas reefer market in season is the closest thing to free money in trucking — but it requires a clean reefer, an on-time pickup, and a backup plan if the produce isn't ready when you arrive. We pre-confirm shipper readiness and have backup shippers in the rolodex when the primary slips.

// FAQ — California

Common questions from CA-based drivers.

I have a 2008 truck — can I still run California freight?
Limited. CARB Clean Truck Check requires 2010+ engine year for most operations and effectively all port drayage. Some non-port CA work is still possible but the program is tightening every year. Talk to us before assuming.
How much can I gross on Salinas reefer in peak season?
Peak Salinas → Northeast pays $9k–$10k per load. Two loads/wk + a backhaul = $18k–$22k weekly gross. Drivers we dispatch in CA produce regularly hit $14k–$18k weekly during May–September.
Are LA/LB drayage rates worth it?
Drayage pays per move ($250–$650 typical, depending on terminal + distance). Volume can be high but chassis pool issues + terminal congestion eat hours. Best for drivers who live in the Inland Empire and can run multiple turns per day.
Can you find me return loads out of CA?
Yes — that's the whole point. We won't book you outbound to CA without a confirmed return plan, even if it means turning down the outbound load.
